# Camlough: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Camlough, finding it before the engine runs normally leaves draining and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single liquid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels near Camlough and Mullaghglass carry, with diesel for the engine.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Camlough

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Dunskey Street, perhaps at the pub in the village on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a new motor.

No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Camlough or out in Bessbrook.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Camlough forecourt or a driveway over in Newry, spend a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in County Armagh that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Heugh Road.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Finish when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Close the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel cap remained closed throughout. Only then, start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Step five is out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Camlough?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

Keep your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it alone starts the pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another — the attendants will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask.

If you're on your own drive in Camlough, leave the vehicle where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Camlough sits over 50 miles from the M77; on it, use the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Camlough is less work than a run of under 3 miles to Newry, and so tell us.

## What happens when we arrive in Camlough

Outside the local primary school, close to the centre or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The answers determine the work and the price, and so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

The drain happens on the spot, whether a drive, a street near a street just off the centre, or a layby towards the green space at the edge of the village.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of the far end of the built-up part? Close to a border? Checking is better than assuming, and so ring.
