# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Camp Town: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where the car is in Camp Town.

Reading in advance? Then what follows covers how it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of newer diesels seen round Camp Town and Alwoodley Park hold another liquid too.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

There is a filler on every tank.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two together under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, again and again.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which filler to use.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Camp Town: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Birkdale Drive before work, or in the car park outside Moortown Social Club on the way home.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the pour starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Camp Town or out in Black Moor.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Moortown or a forecourt around Camp Town.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark what belongs in which inlet just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Headingley, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere around West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Nursery Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Camp Town already?

Short list, then. First: the engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Asda, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive in Camp Town? Then your car stays where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the A58(M), under 5 miles from Camp Town, that means the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Camp Town makes a smaller job than heading under 5 miles towards Leeds — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Camp Town: what takes place when our technicians arrive

Our van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside St Paul's Roman Catholic Church, or by Alwoodley Primary School.

We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, since the replies settle this work and the price.

The quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
