# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Canary Wharf: Why It Happens

Leave your engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, when your motor has not run, it is drained and thoroughly flushed where the car is around Canary Wharf.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels around Limehouse, like those in Canary Wharf, run on two fluids; the engine takes just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Canary Wharf: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off South Colonnade before work, or in the car park outside The Henry Addington on the way home.

Unfamiliar motors come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in Poplar or the middle of Canary Wharf, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Frank Whipple Estate or a forecourt around Canary Wharf, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere across Greater London, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of North Colonnade.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Canary Wharf: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start the engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it alone starts your fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the Asda, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

If you're on your own drive around Canary Wharf, leave the car where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Canary Wharf lies under 10 miles from the M11; there, take the next junction.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Canary Wharf makes a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to London — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Canary Wharf: what happens when our technicians get there

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Primary School, near Bronze Bowl or on your own drive.

What liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those answers set both work and price.

Nobody heads out before you have had the quote by phone.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a test of your car.

Then our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## About Canary Wharf and where it is

Canary Wharf is a suburban area located on the Isle of Dogs in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 8 metres. Canary Wharf sits approximately 4.5 miles east of central London and is close to nearby places such as Poplar, Coalmakers Wharf, and Cubitt Town. Canary Wharf is predominantly composed of flat housing and has a population of around 13331 residents. Canary Wharf is a major part of the Docklands redevelopment area, with a mix of residential and commercial properties.

## AdBlue drains in Canary Wharf and across Greater London

As a residential suburb, Canary Wharf has the same vans as surrounding areas — Coalmakers Wharf, Cubitt Town — all the way through E postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quickest of all: quote a E14 4 postcode to our van.

No need to move the car.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Draped Seated Woman, a lay-by on the way to Westferry Circus, a drive.

Assuming doesn't help behind Cast Glass Panels, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; phone and check.

## In short, for Canary Wharf motorists

Before you tip, read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Leave the vehicle switched off and call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, across Greater London.
