# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cann Hall: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Stop here for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle stands around Cann Hall, is normally all it takes if caught before your motor runs.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows explains how it comes about and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Cann Hall and Wanstead Flats carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

There is a filler for each tank.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two together behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

It's in that gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Cann Hall: how it occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Terling Close before work, or in the car park outside Leytonstone Tavern on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars come next, as well. Rentals, new cars and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Aldersbrook or the middle of Cann Hall: it is the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Stratford New Town or a forecourt around Cann Hall, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Leytonstone High Road? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Greater London, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of St Margaret's Grove, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located your filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Cann Hall?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your motor stays off.

Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone runs the pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the JET, the TotalEnergies or anywhere else.

If you are on your own drive around Cann Hall, leave the car where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

On the M11, under 3 miles from Cann Hall, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Cann Hall is a smaller job than a run towards London, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we get there around Cann Hall, what happens?

The van reaches your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near St Margaret with Saint Columba, or by Mayville Academy.

Which liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since the answers decide the work and price.

No one heads out until you've had the quote over the phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle is tested.

Then we fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before leaving.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Leytonstone Farmers' Market, a lay-by on the way to Cann Hall Park, a driveway.
