# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Canonbury: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Keep your engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Canonbury, finding it before the engine turns usually means draining and a full flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of modern diesels around Kingsland, as well as Canonbury, run on two fluids; the motor takes just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, again and again.

Far less often, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Canonbury: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Alwyne Square, perhaps at The Canonbury Tavern on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Canonbury or out in Highbury.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Canonbury or a driveway over in Barnsbury. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- On many cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of cars mark what goes in each inlet right there.

- The handbook says which it is when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — at the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the light appears — anywhere it is around Greater London — a simple routine to follow.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not rushed beside Canonbury Park North on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Canonbury already?

Brief order, then. First: your motor remains off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Shell, Texaco or another forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Canonbury.

When the motor has run by now, stop safely then switch it off.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Canonbury, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Canonbury is less work than a trip of under 3 miles towards London, so tell us.

## What occurs when we turn up around Canonbury

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it outside Canonbury Primary School, near Louis MacNeice or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Then that tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, no matter how long it sits.

After the filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

After that our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run take roughly half an hour after we arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
