# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Canonmills? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition too.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage only comes when your pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Canonmills, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your engine has run.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Canonmills: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting EH3 5, or whatever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Never:

- Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to start the engine.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Even a short way up Brandon Terrace is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Canonmills filling station — the BP included — will normally help rolling it aside if you ask.

At your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. Once it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup draws its fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Inverleith overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of that tank, untouched — but it will be first through once your engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there.

A car left sitting around Canonmills with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the Morrisons.

No damage comes as long as it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only once your engine works on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Whether your vehicle is in New Town or the heart of Canonmills, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever across City of Edinburgh the car has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Canonmills: how it ends up there

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and after dark the two can look identical. No one intends it.

Mostly it is never the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle driving home and tips it in at home.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Near Huntly Street, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

Another version: darkness, the car park outside The Orchard, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it most — rentals, new ones, fleet cars, and the spare vehicle of a home with both fuel types.

Wherever you're in Canonmills or the remainder of City of Edinburgh, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Canonmills?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

It's been drawn through your filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Perhaps coming back from King George V Park, or midway across Canonmills, the motor may run rough, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M8, under 10 miles from Canonmills, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Canonmills to the car park by The Atelier Gallery is a very different job from a run towards Edinburgh, under a mile away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it's caught early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Canonmills?

Anywhere it has stopped around Canonmills — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road beside The Art Club — our van comes to the vehicle.

Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run, because those replies settle this work.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is cleaned right through since residue won't wash out by itself.

After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, then a check of your vehicle.

Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step.

At that point our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking space at Edinburgh Waverley or a drive around Canonmills.

The check before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

## About Canonmills

Canonmills is a suburban area in the City of Edinburgh, situated near the Water of Leith and close to the Firth of Forth coastline. Canonmills sits at a relatively low elevation of 19 metres, with the city centre of Edinburgh just 0.8 miles away. Canonmills is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and its proximity to neighbouring areas such as Broughton and Stockbridge.

## AdBlue drains in Canonmills and across City of Edinburgh

AdBlue jobs in Canonmills go to teams that cover the towns around it — Broughton, Stockbridge plus Warriston — and much of City of Edinburgh further out, across EH postcodes.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

A mobile service suits Canonmills, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring the car to us, since we drain it on the spot, in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Canonmills

No single figure would be honest, because each job differs.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight space behind Tanfield Hall.

For that reason, each enquiry from Canonmills opens with the same trio — what got in, what quantity, if the engine ran — before a figure.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

The price is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Still next to your car around Canonmills?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Canonmills or anywhere across City of Edinburgh.
