# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Capstone? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and the ignition too.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes when your pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Capstone, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has been run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Capstone: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- Remove the keys, which stops someone switching the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting ME7 3, or whatever street lies closest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Never:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance along Capstone Road.

- Beside the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

The staff on duty at any Capstone forecourt — the Morrisons among them — will normally help rolling it aside if you ask.

On that drive, the vehicle remains just where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It does not combine. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its supply from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Wigmore last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches until it is removed from the system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow passages.

A motor left standing in Capstone with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have an issue of thin fuel.

No harm comes as long as it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Gillingham or the middle of Capstone.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Kent your car is standing.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Capstone: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs allow it.

A container bought while heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Hempstead Infant School the top-up is hurried.

Close to Water Meadow Close, someone pours a bottle in at home in the evening.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Flying Saucer.

It comes up most in a rental, a new vehicle, a company car, or the other motor in a home with both fuel types — the cars people know the least.

Wherever you're in Capstone or the remainder of Kent, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Capstone: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Through your filter, through the lines, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Round Glade or halfway across Capstone.

Once safe, stop then turn it off — with no restarting to see.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M2, under 3 miles from Capstone, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

A quick hop across Capstone to the car park by Chatham Ski & Snowboard Centre is one matter; driving for Southend-on-Sea, under 15 miles away, is something else, since each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it is spotted quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Capstone?

The car stays where it is, whether that's a street beside All Saints Church, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Capstone, and the van travels to it.

The work rests on three answers, and our engineers ask for first — what was put in, the amount, and if your motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is drained, on the spot.

A careful flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't clear out by itself.

A test of your car comes at the end, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where necessary, replaced.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, if the motor hasn't run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Lastly, the system is primed with new diesel.

After that our technicians fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Gillingham (Kent) or a driveway around Capstone.

Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running properly with new diesel in.

No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

At the end, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## About Capstone, for a moment

Capstone is a small coastal hamlet in Kent, situated near the towns of Darland and Hale, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Capstone sits at an elevation of 61 metres, overlooking the Thames Estuary, and is located approximately 14 miles from Southend-on-Sea. Capstone is part of a wider area of rural and suburban communities in the South East of England, with London being around 31 miles to the west. Capstone has a population of around 736 residents, living in a mix of old and new properties.

## AdBlue drains across Kent, Capstone included

The vans that answer AdBlue jobs around Capstone also cover the places around it, Darland, Hale and Hempstead among them, and most of Kent beyond, across the ME postcode area.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere tricky to explain? Asking beats guessing, and so phone.

A mobile service suits Capstone, a rural hamlet: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, because our technicians empty it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Capstone

Since each callouts vary, a single price would not be fair.

Three things move the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Upper Shawstead Farm.

What was put in, how much, plus whether it ran: every Capstone enquiry begins with precisely those, before a figure, never afterwards.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## In Capstone and still next to your car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, then, the best thing you can do.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus if the engine ran are all we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest across Kent, Capstone too.
