# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Captain Fold

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Captain Fold, catching it before your engine runs normally leaves draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your motor — but many newer diesels driven round Captain Fold and Back o th Moss hold another fluid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

There is a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Captain Fold: how it takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Benfield Street before work, or in the car park outside The Kings on the way home.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

Whether it occurs in Heywood or the middle of Captain Fold, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Hopwood or a forecourt in Captain Fold, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Castleton, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Greater Manchester that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of King Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Captain Fold: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the engine.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Esso or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Captain Fold.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next exit means where to leave when you're on the M62, under 3 miles from Captain Fold.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Captain Fold is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards Manchester — so say about how far it went.

## What takes place when we turn up in Captain Fold

By Harwood Park Primary School, near Heywood Library or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the replies decide both work and quote.

Nobody sets off before you have heard our quote by phone.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After your filter is flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then the car is tested.

Before we go, our technicians start the car and make sure that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our engineers get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Wherever it sits — near Saint Luke's Church, Heywood, on a layby en route to Heywood Memeorial Gardens, on a drive — that's where it is emptied.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Heywood St James? Close to a border? Asking beats assuming, and so ring.
