# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cargan: Why It Happens

Keep the motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, if the motor has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle sits in Cargan.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels in Clogh, as well as Cargan, carry on two fluids; the motor gets only your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cargan: how it takes place

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Wallace Cottages before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars come second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it.

It's a few seconds, whether in Newtown Crommelin or right in the centre of Cargan.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Waterfoot or a forecourt in Cargan, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across County Antrim the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Dunaverty Court, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Cargan: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

At home around Cargan? So the vehicle remains put.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Cargan, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Cargan is less work than a trip of under 50 miles to Belfast, and so say.

## When our technicians arrive in Cargan, what occurs?

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near the centre or on your own driveway.

What fluid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers decide the work and price.

The price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

The system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Once the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting BT43 7.

Shifting the vehicle isn't needed.

Anywhere it stands — near a street just off the centre, on a lay-by en route to the green space at the edge of the village, on a drive — that's where it is emptied.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of the far end of the built-up part.

## For Cargan drivers, the short version

First, the cap; then, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in County Antrim, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
