# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Carlton

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Carlton, catching it before the engine turns usually means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Carlton and Athersley North run, with diesel feeding your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Carlton: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Church Street, perhaps outside Ring o' Bells on the way home after work.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Royston or the heart of Carlton: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Monk Bretton or a forecourt in Carlton.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of vehicles, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many vehicles show what goes in which inlet just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Barnsley? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever you are around South Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Shaw Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Do not go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Carlton?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at The Co-operative, JET or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away if asked.

On your own drive in Carlton? So the car stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction is where to leave when you are on the M1, under 5 miles from Carlton.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Carlton makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Wakefield — so say about how far it went.

## What takes place when we turn up in Carlton

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, near Carlton War Memorial, or outside Carlton Primary Academy.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since the replies decide this work and the quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. That is why it counts more.

The filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

Before we leave, we start the engine and make sure that it is running correctly.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Carlton lies approximately 7 miles from Wakefield and is surrounded by nearby places such as Royston, West Green, and Athersley South. ## AdBlue drains across South Yorkshire, Carlton included

Throughout S postcodes, our vans that cover Carlton — a village — work the surrounding locations too, Athersley South and West Green included.

Fastest of all: quote a S71 3 postcode for our van.

The vehicle remains put.

Draining happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a street by St John the Evangelist, or a layby on the way to Carlton Park.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Carlton Parish Hall? Close to a county line? Asking beats guessing, and so ring.

## Carlton motorists: the short version

First, the cap; then, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in South Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
