# Caton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where your vehicle stands around Caton, is usually all it needs if found before the motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Caton and Halton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

There is a filler on every tank.

Many of motors share a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Caton?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Lancaster Road before work, or in the car park at The Station Hotel on the way home.

Unfamiliar motors are second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on.

It takes seconds, be it out in Brookhouse or right in the heart of Caton.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Caton or a drive out in Crossgill. Seconds, no more.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Lancaster.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever in Lancashire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Station Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five is out.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Caton?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — Station Garage, Shell or another — the staff will normally help push your car away, if you ask.

Your own driveway around Caton is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Caton sits under 3 miles from the M6; there, use the first exit.

A short hop across Caton is a smaller job than a run towards Lancaster, under 5 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there in Caton, what takes place?

Outside Caton Primary School, near Caton War Memorial or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those answers set the work and price.

Nobody sets off until you've heard the quote by phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. That is why it matters more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains in Caton and across Lancashire

Being a village, Caton shares its vans nearby areas — Halton Green, Caton Green — right through LA postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Quickest of all: quote a LA2 9 postcode to the van.

No need to move the vehicle.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Victoria Institute, a lay-by on the way to Caton Sports Field, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Caton Catholic Church.

## The short version for Caton drivers
