# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Catteralslane: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Catteralslane, catching it before your motor turns normally leaves draining and a full flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Catteralslane and Ash Magna carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in Catteralslane

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Catterals Lane before work, or in the car park at The White Lion on the way home.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

Edgeley or the heart of Catteralslane: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Heathlane or a forecourt in Catteralslane.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual says where.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Whitchurch (Shropshire), ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Shropshire, use this routine.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Ash Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Catteralslane already?

Don't start the engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

Leave your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the Esso, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

## Catteralslane: what occurs when our engineers arrive

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, near Whitchurch War Memorial, or by Whitchurch CofE Infant and Nursery Academy.

Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the replies decide the work and the quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Then your tank is cleared and the system rinsed thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of it washes out on its own, however long it sits.

A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
