# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cauldhame

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the motor off then leave the ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts until your motor pulls it through.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Cauldhame.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Cauldhame: the first few minutes

To do:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, take the keys out.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting FK8 3, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.

Not to do:

- Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance up Davidson's Lea.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Cauldhame forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station or any other.

On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same place the pickup draws from.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Culmore overnight and has not turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if the engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a vehicle sitting around Cauldhame. Only inside the tank, it stays stable.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Thames and you have a fault of thin fuel.

Harm only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It can't just be run through, since it does not burn.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the next fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Cauldhame or out in Murdieston, does more harm than nearly any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever across Stirling the vehicle has stopped.

## Cauldhame: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — can look the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts invite it.

It usually occurs outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car.

Near Old Vinery, a driver tips a bottle in on that drive in the evening.

Otherwise, after dark by The Inn at Kippen, the car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars get it the most — hire cars, new cars, fleet ones, and the spare vehicle of a family with both fuels.

Wherever you're around Cauldhame or the rest of Stirling, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cauldhame, and the motor started?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked through, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Maybe returning from Bollochlinn Strip, or part way across Cauldhame, your motor might go rough, smoke, drop power, light up the dash or cut out.

Once safe, pull over and switch everything off — without restarting to test.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M9, under 10 miles from Cauldhame, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so driving towards Stirling, under 10 miles away, makes a far larger job than crossing Cauldhame to the car park by Kippen Parish Church.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the motor has been run.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's spotted soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Cauldhame?

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Cauldhame: a side street near Kippen Village Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

What got in, about the quantity, and if your motor has turned over: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the job.

Then that tank is emptied where the vehicle waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of your vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, if the engine hasn't run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime your system on fresh diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay by Bridge of Allan or a driveway around Cauldhame, that is where our technicians start the car and you drive off.

Before leaving, our engineers make sure it is running properly with new diesel in.

We do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a garage.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Stirling, Cauldhame included

AdBlue call-outs around Cauldhame are passed to teams that serve the towns near it — Kippen, Glentirranmuir as well as Arnprior — and most of Stirling beyond, across FK postcodes.

Near a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Checking is better than assuming, so ring.

A mobile service suits Cauldhame, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring the vehicle to us, because we drain it on the spot, on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cauldhame: the cost of fixing it

Each job differs, and so not one fixed price would be fair.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind New Water Supply Commemorative Fountain.

Ahead of any figure, not after, every call from Cauldhame opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and if it ran.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

The price is given on the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

As our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Beside your car around Cauldhame, right now?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Tell us it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Cauldhame or wherever in Stirling.
