# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cawney Hill: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your motor has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly purged where your car is in Cawney Hill.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of modern diesels seen round Cawney Hill and Dixons Green hold another liquid as well.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## Cawney Hill: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Tansley Hill Avenue before work, or in the car park at The Bush Inn on the way home.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Cawney Hill or out in Tansley Hill.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Kates Hill or a forecourt in Cawney Hill.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Dudley Port, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere in West Midlands the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Green Park Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Both under a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Skip step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Cawney Hill?

Short list, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Tesco or any other — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Cawney Hill.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off.

The next junction is the place to come off if you're on the M5, under 3 miles from Cawney Hill.

A short hop across Cawney Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers get there in Cawney Hill

The van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside 7th Dudley Scout Group, or outside Tividale Hall Primary School.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those answers determine this work and our quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Then that tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. Hence it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and check that it's running properly.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Cawney Hill and West Midlands: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, Cawney Hill has the same vans as surrounding areas — Oakham, Tividale Hall — right through DY postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

A postcode starting DY2 7 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to St John's Worship Centre and Parish Hall, a lay-by on the way to Black Country Millennium Forest, a driveway.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Parish Church of St John the Evangelist? Close to a county line? Checking beats guessing, so ring.
