# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cefn-y-Garth: Why It Happens

Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle is in Cefn-y-Garth.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but many newer diesels seen round Cefn-y-Garth and Aber-Clydach hold another fluid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Cefn-y-Garth?

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Balaclava Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Globe Inn.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, carries on.

Whether it takes place in Glais or the middle of Cefn-y-Garth, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Faerdre or a forecourt in Cefn-y-Garth.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many cars show what goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — at Llansamlet's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere across Swansea, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Graig-y-dderi.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Cefn-y-Garth already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Keep your ignition off too, since on many diesels it by itself starts your fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Cefn-y-Garth.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off.

Cefn-y-Garth sits under 3 miles from the M4; there, use the next exit.

## What happens when we arrive in Cefn-y-Garth

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Saint Paul's Church or on your own driveway.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide both work and quote.

No one sets off until you have had the price by phone.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the car.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
