# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chadsmoor: Why It Happens

Pause here a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out just where your car stands around Chadsmoor, is normally all it needs if caught before your engine runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of newer diesels driven about Chadsmoor and High Town hold another liquid too.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Chadsmoor

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Redhill Road before work, or in the car park outside The Bridge Inn on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars come next, as well. Rentals, new cars and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, keeps on.

West Chadsmoor or the heart of Chadsmoor: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Oldfallow or a forecourt in Chadsmoor.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Hednesford.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Staffordshire, use this routine.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Taplow Place.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Chadsmoor: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start your engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Texaco or any other — the staff will normally help push the car clear, if you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Chadsmoor, leave it where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next junction means the place to leave if you are on the M6 Toll, under 3 miles from Chadsmoor.

A short hop across Chadsmoor is a smaller job than a run towards Lichfield, under 10 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers get there around Chadsmoor, what happens?

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, whether by Redhill Primary School, beside Chadsmoor Methodist Church or at home, the van comes to it.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask since those answers decide both work and quote.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes away unaided, however long it sits.

Testing comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains around Chadsmoor, and Staffordshire beyond

Over WS postcodes, the teams that cover Chadsmoor — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, Blackfords and Broomhill included.

Give a postcode that starts WS11 5, and our van arrives fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to St Chad, a lay-by on the way to Skelly, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St Aidan.

## Chadsmoor drivers: the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it where it is, anywhere in Staffordshire: switch the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
