# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Charnock Hall

Stop reading a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly flushed where your car sits in Charnock Hall.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Charnock Hall and Gleadless carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on each tank.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## Charnock Hall: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Carson Mount, or at Pig & Whistle Micropub on the way home after work.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Charnock Hall or out in Gleadless Townend.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Common Side or a forecourt around Charnock Hall, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors mark which goes in each filler right there.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Darnall? Ask the person who drove the car last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever in South Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of White Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- The two behind one flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Charnock Hall already?

Do not start the engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

Keep your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on by itself starts your fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — Esso, another forecourt nearby or any other — the attendants will normally help roll the car clear, if you ask.

At home in Charnock Hall? Then the vehicle remains put.

Where your engine has run already, pull over safely and switch the vehicle off.

The next exit means the place to leave when you're on the M1, under 5 miles from Charnock Hall.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Charnock Hall is smaller work than a run of under 5 miles towards Sheffield, so tell us.

## Charnock Hall: what happens when our technicians turn up

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Gleadless Methodist Church, or outside Charnock Hall Primary Academy.

Those replies decide this work and our price, so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

During the phone call itself, you are told our price — ahead of anything else.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once the filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

After that we fire it up and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Anywhere it stands — beside Allied Snooker Club, on a lay-by en route to Charnock Recreation Grounds, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Tricky to explain, like the back of St Peter’s Church? By a border? Asking beats guessing, and so phone.
