# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chatham: Why It Occurs

Leave your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Chatham.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels near Chatham and Luton run, with diesel for your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the slip happens.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Chatham?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off The Brook before work, or in the car park outside The Prince of Wales on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar car.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Brompton or the middle of Chatham, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Strood or a forecourt in Chatham, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many vehicles show which goes in which inlet right there.

- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere across Kent the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed by Military Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Chatham?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the staff will normally help push the car away, if you ask.

Your own drive in Chatham is the place it stays.

Already started? Stop once it is safe, then switch off.

Chatham sits under 3 miles from the M2; there, take the first junction.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Chatham makes a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Southend-on-Sea — so tell us about how far it went.

## When we turn up around Chatham, what occurs?

By Brompton-Westbrook Primary School, close to The Brook Theatre or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Those answers decide this work and our price, so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

That price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then your tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. That is why it matters more.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## About Chatham itself

Chatham is a coastal town situated in Kent, England, and is part of a larger urban area that includes several neighbouring towns. Chatham is located within the Medway unitary authority and is closely tied to the surrounding communities. The town's coastal setting and proximity to other urban centres make it a notable part of the region. Chatham is a significant component of the local conurbation, which also includes Gillingham, Rochester, and other nearby towns.

## AdBlue drains around Chatham and across Kent

Being a coastal town, Chatham has the same vans as surrounding areas — Troy Town, Rochester — all the way across ME postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting ME4 4.

There's no need to move your car.

Anywhere it sits — near The Paddock, in a layby heading to The Paddock, on a drive — that's where it gets emptied.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Medway Magistrates Court? By a county line? Asking is better than assuming, so ring.

## Chatham drivers: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Kent.
