# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chelmer Village: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, keep your ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor hasn't run, it's drained and fully rinsed where the car is around Chelmer Village.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers how it happens and how to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Not one fluid but two: that is how plenty of modern diesels near Chelmer Village and Great Baddow carry, with diesel for your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side under one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Chelmer Village?

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Chelmer Village Way before work, or in the car park at Chelmer Inn on the way home.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Springfield or the middle of Chelmer Village, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Chelmer Village or a drive out in Readers Corner. Seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Beaulieu Park's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the light appears — anywhere you are across Essex — a simple routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Blacklock.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- The two behind one flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel side is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using the own spout.

- Close the cap, and check once more — making sure your diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Chelmer Village already?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Asda, Sainsbury's or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Chelmer Village.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

Chelmer Village lies under 15 miles from the M25; on it, take the first junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Chelmer Village is smaller work than a trip of under 3 miles towards Chelmsford, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Chelmer Village, and what happens next

Our van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near Chelmer Village Hall, or by Barnes Farm Primary School.

The answers settle the work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run.

That quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then your tank is drained and your system rinsed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out by itself. That is why it counts more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we arrive, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
