# Cheriton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Cheriton, catching it before your engine turns usually means draining and a full flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Cheriton and Shorncliffe Camp carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Cheriton: how it happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Chilham Road, or heading home in the car park at Royal Cheriton.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a strange vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Morehall or right in the centre of Cheriton.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Cheriton or a drive out in Horn Street. A few seconds, that's all.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many cars show which goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Folkestone West, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Kent that is.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Risborough Lane.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Stop when your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly through the built-in spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Cheriton?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Leave your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on alone starts your pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — BP, Esso or any other — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle away, if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway in Cheriton, leave the car where it is.

Already run? Stop when it's sensible, then switch off.

The next exit is the place to leave when you're on the M20, under a mile from Cheriton.

About how far did it go? Crossing Cheriton is smaller work than a run of under 15 miles towards Canterbury, and so tell us.

## When our technicians turn up around Cheriton, what occurs?

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside All Soul's Church of England Primary School, close to Other People's Photographs Taylor Road or on your own drive.

The answers determine this work and the price, and so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. That is why it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

After that we start it and confirm it runs properly before we go.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
