# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cheslyn Hay: How It Happens and How to Stop It

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not turned, it's drained and fully rinsed where the car is around Cheslyn Hay.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels in Churchbridge, as well as Cheslyn Hay, run on two liquids; the engine gets just the diesel.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which filler to use.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cheslyn Hay: how it takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Mitre Road before work, or in the car park outside Colliers Arms on the way home.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, carries on.

Littlewood or the heart of Cheslyn Hay: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Middle Hill or a forecourt around Cheslyn Hay.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Landywood, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever in Staffordshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Queen Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Cheslyn Hay: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Esso, Sainsbury's or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push your car clear when asked.

If you're on your own driveway around Cheslyn Hay, leave it where it stands.

Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then turn off.

Cheslyn Hay lies under a mile from the M6 Toll; there, take the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Cheslyn Hay.

## What occurs when our engineers get there around Cheslyn Hay

Our van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near Salem Church, or by Cheslyn Hay Primary Academy.

We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the replies determine this work and our quote.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

Before leaving, we start the car and check that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we arrive, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
