# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Chessmount? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your motor pulls it through.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle stands in Chessmount.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Chessmount

Do these:

- Remove the keys, and that stops someone switching the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't bin it out.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting HP5 1, or just the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

- Don't start the motor, even for a moment to move the car.

- Switching your key to ignition alone sets your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Pouring in extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Even a short way down Larks Rise is too far to drive the car.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

The attendants working at any Chessmount filling station — the Esso among them — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the very spot the intake sucks from.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in The Broadway yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle sitting in Chessmount. Just in your tank, it stays the same.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Mixed through your diesel and left unused, it's no threat for now; running your engine is the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the following tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Chessmount or out in Pednormead End, costs more than almost any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever in Buckinghamshire the car has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Chessmount

Many motors put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. Nobody intends it.

It usually takes place outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Waterside Primary Academy.

A driver pours the container in at home, just off Woodland View, as the day ends.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Pheasant.

The least familiar cars get it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor of a family with one of each fuel types.

Anywhere across Buckinghamshire, Chessmount included, the slip does not change, and nor does the first step: keep it off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Chessmount?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Perhaps returning from Hill Farm Plantation, or midway across Chessmount, your engine might run rough, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

Once safe, pull over and turn everything off — with no restarting to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M25, under 10 miles from Chessmount, at the first junction and park safely, not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Chessmount to the car park by Christ Church is a very different job from a run towards St Albans, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has ended up, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

Noticed quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Chessmount

Anywhere it has come to rest in Chessmount — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a road by Chesham Moor Gym and Swim — our van travels to your car.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if the engine has been run, since those answers determine this work.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue will not wash out by itself.

After that, your filter: cleaned, or changed when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of your car.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we get there, if your motor has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step.

You set off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Chessmount or in a bay at Amersham.

The check before our technicians head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Chessmount itself

Chessmount is a suburban area in Buckinghamshire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of around 138 metres. Chessmount lies near the towns of Chesham and St Albans, and is also close to the smaller communities of Waterside and Lower Bois. Chessmount has a population of approximately 2756 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Chessmount is located about 24 miles from London, making it a commuter base for those working in the capital.

## AdBlue drains across Chessmount and Buckinghamshire

AdBlue jobs in Chessmount go to vans that serve the places near it — Waterside, Lower Bois as well as Chesham — and most of Buckinghamshire further out, throughout HP postcodes.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

Anywhere the car sits — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we empty it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Chessmount, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Chessmount: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Benjamin Grove Memorial.

That is why every call from Chessmount starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run.

Their replies narrow the range down to a single number.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is travelling, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.

## Still alongside the vehicle around Chessmount?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether the engine ran is all our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Buckinghamshire, Chessmount too.
