# Chesterton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine hasn't turned, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle sits in Chesterton.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels around Kings Hill, like those in Chesterton, run on two fluids; your motor takes only your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## Chesterton: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Chesterton Park before work, or in the car park outside Corinium Ales on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: an unfamiliar car.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

Cirencester or the middle of Chesterton: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Upper Siddington or a forecourt around Chesterton, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Kemble, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Gloucestershire, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Chesterton Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check once more — making sure your diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Chesterton already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Texaco, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

At home around Chesterton? So the vehicle stays where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Chesterton lies under 15 miles from the M4; there, take the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Gloucester, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Chesterton.

## What takes place when our technicians arrive in Chesterton

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Chesterton Primary School, close to Querns or on your own driveway.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those answers set both work and quote.

The quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

The system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

After that our engineers start the car and check it runs correctly before we go.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains in Chesterton and across Gloucestershire

Over GL postcodes, the vans covering Chesterton — a residential suburb — work the nearby spots too, Bowling Green and Watermoor included.

Give a postcode that starts GL7 1, and the van gets there quickest.

Moving the vehicle is not necessary.

Draining takes place right there, whether a drive, a road by LIbrary (L) Block, or a layby towards Four Acre Field.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Querns Barrow? Close to a border? Checking is better than assuming, so phone.

## In short, for Chesterton drivers

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere across Gloucestershire.
