# Chigwell: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep the motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain and a full flush, done right where the vehicle sits around Chigwell, is usually all it takes if found before your engine runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Buckhurst Hill, like those in Chigwell, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what cap it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Chigwell

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Hainault Road, perhaps outside The King WIlliam IV on the way home that evening.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It's a few seconds, whether in Grange Hill or bang in the centre of Chigwell.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Hainault or a forecourt around Chigwell.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Chingford's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — wherever you are across Essex — a simple routine to use.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Brook Parade.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Step five stays out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Chigwell?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the staff to help roll the car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the JET or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Chigwell.

Already run? Pull over when it is safe, then switch off.

The next junction is where to leave if you're on the M11, under a mile from Chigwell.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Chigwell is smaller a job than a trip of under 15 miles to London, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Chigwell, and what occurs next

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it outside Chigwell Primary Academy, near Chigwell Parish Council or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run, because those replies determine this work and the quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and then your vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we get there, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

Give a postcode that starts IG7 6, and the van arrives fastest.

There's no need to move the car.

The drain takes place right there, be it a drive, a road by Chigwell Library, or a layby on the way to Chigwell Golf Club.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St Mary's, Chigwell.
