# Chilworth: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Chilworth.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of modern diesels driven around Chilworth and North Stoneham hold a second liquid as well.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Chilworth?

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Winchester Road, or outside The Chilworth Arms on the way home after work.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and once the tip begins, no part stops it.

Bassett or the middle of Chilworth: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Chilworth or a driveway over in Lordswood. A few seconds, no more.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Swaythling, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever across Hampshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush by M3 at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- Both under a single flap? Then make sure the lid on the diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Chilworth?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — Shell, Asda or any other — the staff will usually help push the car away, if you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Chilworth, leave it where it sits.

Already run? Stop when it's sensible, then switch off.

On the M3, under a mile from Chilworth, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Chilworth is less work than a run of under 5 miles to Southampton, so say.

## When our technicians arrive in Chilworth, what takes place?

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Nightingale Primary School, near St. Michael and All Angels or on your own driveway.

Those answers determine the work and the price, so we ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. Hence it matters more.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

The motor is started next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before we head off.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run take roughly half an hour once we are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
