# Chipperfield: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

In Chipperfield, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels around Belsize, as well as Chipperfield, run on two fluids; your engine gets only your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which filler to use.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Chipperfield

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Langley Road before work, or in the car park outside The Windmill on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Chapel Croft or the middle of Chipperfield, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Commonwood or a forecourt around Chipperfield.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Apsley? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hertfordshire that is.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed by Kings Lane on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Chipperfield: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Biggerstaff's Garage or the Texaco, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Your own driveway around Chipperfield is where it should stay.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next exit means where to leave when you are on the M25, under 3 miles from Chipperfield.

A short hop across Chipperfield is a smaller job than a run towards St Albans, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up around Chipperfield, what occurs?

Outside St Paul's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, Chipperfield, near Chipperfield Baptist Church or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what fluid, what amount, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

The quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

The engine is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run take roughly half an hour after our engineers are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
