# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chipping: Why It Happens

Leave your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Chipping.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many modern diesels on the roads round Chipping and Walker Fold carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the fumes.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

The error lives in that gap.

## Chipping: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Kirklands before work, or in the car park at The Sun Inn on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Hesketh Lane or the heart of Chipping: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Chipping forecourt or a drive out in Cow Ark, spend a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it next to the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Clitheroe.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Lancashire, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Talbot Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Chipping already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Shell, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else.

Your own drive around Chipping is the place it should stay.

Where the engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe and turn it off.

The next junction is the place to leave when you are on the M6, under 10 miles from Chipping.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Chipping is smaller a job than a run of under 10 miles to Preston, so say.

## Our arrival around Chipping, and what happens next

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether by St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School, Chipping, near Saint Bartholomew's Church or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what fluid, which quantity, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

Nobody heads out until you've had our quote over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

After your filter has been flushed — or renewed, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then the car gets tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once our engineers are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

## Chipping and Lancashire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over PR postcodes, our teams covering Chipping — a village — work the surrounding places too, Bleasdale and Whitewell among them.

Fastest of all: give a PR3 2 postcode to the van.

No need to shift your car.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Chipping Village Hall, a lay-by on the way to Chipping Showground, a driveway.

Assuming won't help at the back of Chipping Congregational Church, on a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe; phone and check.

## Chipping people: the short version

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere around Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103.
