# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chipping Ongar: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Chipping Ongar, catching it before your engine runs usually means a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many modern diesels driven around Chipping Ongar and Hallsford Bridge hold another fluid as well.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together under one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Chipping Ongar: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Carters Yard before work, or in the car park outside The Kings Head on the way home.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It's seconds, be it out in Marden Ash or right in the heart of Chipping Ongar.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in High Ongar or a forecourt in Chipping Ongar, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it lives when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Shenfield? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere across Essex the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of High Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then look again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Chipping Ongar?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the BP, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Chipping Ongar.

Where the motor has been run by now, stop safely then turn the car off.

On the M25, under 5 miles from Chipping Ongar, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Chipping Ongar is a smaller job than a run towards Chelmsford, under 15 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Chipping Ongar, what occurs?

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Chipping Ongar Primary School, close to Chipping Ongar town sign or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the price rest on three answers — what liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

During the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before dispatch.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

Then our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
