# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Christchurch: Why It Happens

Pause here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not run, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle is in Christchurch.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the engine — yet many newer diesels seen round Christchurch and Lawrence Hill carry a second liquid as well.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think what filler to use.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Christchurch: how it occurs

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Royal Oak Hill, perhaps outside Greyhound Inn on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a new motor.

No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, whether out in Coldra or bang in the heart of Christchurch.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Christchurch forecourt or a drive out in Bishpool, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Newport (South Wales)? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever in Newport, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Coldra Mill Park, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly using its own spout.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Christchurch?

Don't start your engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Tesco or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Christchurch.

When your engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and switch the car off.

Come off the M4 — under a mile out of Christchurch — at the next junction.

A short hop across Christchurch is a smaller job than a run towards Newport, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Christchurch, and what happens next

Outside the local primary school, close to Monument of James Rennie or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The replies settle this work and the quote, and so we ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run.

The quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your car.

Then our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## About Christchurch and where it is

Christchurch is a suburban area in Newport, Wales, situated near the coast at an elevation of 67 metres. Christchurch lies approximately 2.6 miles from Newport city centre and is surrounded by nearby places such as Coldra and Ringland. Christchurch is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. Christchurch is home to around 2908 people, according to approximate population figures.

## AdBlue drains across Newport, Christchurch included

As a residential suburb, Christchurch has the same vans as surrounding areas — Ringland, The Village — right across NP postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Give a postcode that starts NP19 9, and the van arrives fastest.

Moving the car is not needed.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Cwm Wood, a side street close to Holy Trinity Church Parish Hall: our technicians drain it where it sits.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Monument of Willmett and Darvel.

## The short version for Christchurch drivers

Always, the cap; then, the tip.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Newport.
