# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chryston: Why It Occurs

Pause here for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Chryston, catching it before the engine turns usually leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Chryston and Garnkirk carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both together under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Chryston: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Gartferry Road before work, or in the car park at Auchengeich Miners Welfare on the way home.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

It takes seconds, whether in Bridgend or right in the centre of Chryston.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Gartcosh or a forecourt around Chryston, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a rental or company car — at Gartcosh's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever you are in North Lanarkshire — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pentland Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Chryston already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Chryston.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

Leave the M80 — under a mile out of Chryston — at the next exit.

A short hop across Chryston is a smaller job than a run towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Chryston, and what takes place next

The van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Chryston Parish Church, or outside the local primary school.

What fluid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide both work and quote.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Then the tank is emptied and your system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

Before leaving, our engineers start the engine and check that it is running properly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## About Chryston itself

Chryston is a village in North Lanarkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 89 metres, with Glasgow approximately 6 miles to the west. Chryston has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are predominant, and the village is close to nearby places such as Bridgend, Muirhead, and Moodiesburn. Chryston is located in a commuter belt, with easy access to Glasgow and other surrounding towns.

## AdBlue drains across North Lanarkshire, Chryston included

Being a village, Chryston has the same vans as surrounding places — Muirhead, Moodiesburn — all the way through G postcodes and the wider area beyond.

A postcode starting G69 9 gets the van to you fastest.

Shifting the vehicle isn't necessary.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Crow Wood Golf Club, a side street close to Bedlay Castle: we drain it where it stands.

Guessing doesn't help behind Bedlay Well, on a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down; ring and check.

## The short version for Chryston motorists

First, the cap; then, the pour.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel will empty it where it stands, anywhere around North Lanarkshire: switch the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
