# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Church End

Leave your engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, if the motor has not turned, it is drained and fully purged where your vehicle is around Church End.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Church End and Woodside Park carry, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Church End?

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Nether Street, or heading home in the car park outside King of Prussia.

Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Finchley or the heart of Church End: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Temple Fortune or a forecourt around Church End.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it is when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside New Southgate? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are across Greater London — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Regent's Park Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Both under a single flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, and check once more — confirm the diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Church End?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the BP, the Esso or anywhere else.

At home in Church End? So your car remains where it is.

When your motor has been run by now, pull over safely and turn the car off.

On the M1, under 3 miles from Church End, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Church End is smaller work than a trip of under 10 miles to London, and so say.

## What occurs when our engineers arrive in Church End

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Pardes House Primary School, close to St Mary's Court or on your own drive.

The replies decide this work and the price, so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run.

On the phone call itself, you hear the price — ahead of anything else.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

Quickest of all: give a N3 1 postcode for our van.

There's no need to move the vehicle.

The drain happens on the spot, be it a driveway, a street near Barnet County Court, or a lay-by towards Church End Gardens.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St Margaret's United Reform Church.
