# Churscombe: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, keep your ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Churscombe.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that is what many newer diesels around Churscombe and Hollicombe run, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Churscombe

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Windmill Lane before work, or in the car park outside Ye Olde Smokey House on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, keeps on.

It takes seconds, whether in Shorton or bang in the centre of Churscombe.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Churscombe or a drive over in Paignton. Seconds, no more.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a rental or company car — at Paignton's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Devon, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and not in a rush by Marldon Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Churscombe already?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs your pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Harvest Energy, Texaco or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car away when asked.

Your own drive in Churscombe is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Churscombe lies under 25 miles from the M5; on it, take the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Churscombe is less work than a run of under 25 miles towards Exeter, so say.

## When our technicians turn up around Churscombe, what happens?

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, be it by Kings Ash Academy, beside Occombe Farm or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

The answers decide the work and our price, so we ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes out unaided, however long it sits.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Foxhole Community Association, a lay-by on the way to Browses Brake, a drive.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Saint Boniface Community Church and Hall? Close to a border? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.
