# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Clandown: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your motor hasn't run, it's emptied and fully purged where your vehicle is around Clandown.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around Clandown and Fox Hills carry, with diesel for the engine.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Clandown: how it happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Foseway before work, or in the car park at The Radstock Hotel heading home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour begins, no part stops it.

It takes seconds, be it in Radstock or bang in the heart of Clandown.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Clandown forecourt or a drive out in West Hill Gardens, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Oldfield Park? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Somerset that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Smallcombe Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Clandown: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the engine.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Murco, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

On your own drive around Clandown? So the car stays where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit is where to leave if you are on the M32, under 15 miles from Clandown.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bath, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Clandown.

## Clandown: what occurs when we turn up

Outside Trinity Church School, close to Radstock Museum or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The replies settle the work and our quote, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

No one heads out before you have heard the quote over the phone.

Then your tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed as needed.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses, ring and ask instead of assuming.
