# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Clapham

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Clapham.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of current diesels seen round Clapham and Biddenham carry a second fluid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

It is in the gap that the slip lives.

## Clapham: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off The Close, perhaps at The Horse and Groom on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Clapham or out in Clapham Green.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Clapham forecourt or a drive over in Queens Park, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- Can't see it next to the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Bedford, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere around Bedfordshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of The Warren, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.

- The two behind one flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel filler is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Clapham: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Sainsbury's, Avon Drive Service Centre or another — the attendants will usually help roll the car clear, if you ask.

Your own drive in Clapham is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Clapham sits under 15 miles from the M1; there, use the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Milton Keynes, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Clapham.

## Our arrival around Clapham, and what takes place next

By Ursula Taylor Church of England School, near Clapham Methodist Church or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those answers decide the work and our quote.

That price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our technicians get there, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

## About Clapham, briefly

Clapham is a village in Bedfordshire, situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse at an elevation of 33 metres. Clapham has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most prevalent, and its population of around 1127 residents gives it a small, close-knit feel. Clapham is located near other villages such as Clapham Green, Oakley, and Bromham, and is within commuting distance of Milton Keynes, which is approximately 13.7 miles away. Clapham's proximity to the river and surrounding countryside makes it a pleasant place to live, with London around 47.8 miles to the south.

## AdBlue drains around Clapham and across Bedfordshire

Oakley and Bromham are among the places around Clapham, a village, that the same vans cover, throughout MK postcodes.

Fastest of all: give a MK41 6 postcode for our van.

Your car doesn't need to shift.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Bromham Lake Nature Researve, a side street near St Thomas of Canterbury: we drain the vehicle where it is.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of bird hide.

## In short, for Clapham motorists

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Bedfordshire.
