# Clayhall: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens till your motor sucks it round.

In Clayhall, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Clayhall

Things to do:

- Remove your keys, which stops someone switching the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.

- Tell us a postcode starting IG5 0, or whichever street lies closest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- Moving the car just a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Marlands Road.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

Get the attendants to help you move your vehicle away from the island if you are at a forecourt around Clayhall, whether it's the Shell or elsewhere.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it stands.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It does not blend. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, which is why a car topped up in Redbridge last night and not switched on stays the straightforward one, provided no one turns your key.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches until it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages.

By daybreak, a car sitting around Clayhall with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's only inside that tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more significant than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the K&S Fuels Limited.

Mixed through the diesel and left unused, it's no threat for now; using the engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, and so watering it can't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Fullwell Cross or the heart of Clayhall equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Wherever across Greater London the car has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

## Clayhall: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. Nobody intends it.

Mostly it is never the filling station: someone picks up a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Glade Primary School the top-up is rushed.

Near Stradbroke Grove, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening.

Otherwise, in dim light outside The Unicorn, the vehicle gets topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up the most in a rental, a new vehicle, a company car, or the other car of a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers use the least.

Leave it off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere around Clayhall or the remainder of Greater London you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Clayhall, and the motor started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through your filter, through the lines, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, maybe part way across Clayhall or coming back from Hurstleigh Gardens Open Space.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the M11, under a mile from Clayhall, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Mileage matters: every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading for London, under 10 miles away, gives a far bigger job than hopping across Clayhall to the car park by Clayhall Baptist Church.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is spotted soon.

## Clayhall: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Clayhall: a side street close to Clayhall Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The work depends on three replies, which we get before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if your engine has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't wash away on its own.

Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of the car.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the engine has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step.

At that point our technicians start it and you set off, whether from a parking space by Ilford or a drive around Clayhall.

Before we go, our technicians check it's running properly with new diesel in.

Because the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## Clayhall and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Clayhall are passed to teams that cover the towns near it — Barkingside, Repton Park as well as Woodford Bridge — and most of Greater London further out, throughout IG postcodes.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Clayhall is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Clayhall: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, and so no single quote is honest.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight space behind St John Vianney.

That is why every call from Clayhall starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run.

Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Our quote is given on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.

## In Clayhall and still beside the car?

In that case, do nothing — that is the best move there is.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and if the engine ran are all we ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder across Greater London, Clayhall included.
