# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Claypole: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully cleaned where your car is in Claypole.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels in Fenton, like those in Claypole, carry on two fluids; your motor takes only the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Claypole: how it occurs

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Redthorn Way before work, or in the car park outside The Five Bells on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

Stubton or the middle of Claypole: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Barnby in the Willows or a forecourt in Claypole, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Newark Northgate? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lincolnshire that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Oster Fen Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- The two under one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Claypole already?

Short order, then. Top of it: the motor remains unstarted.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or the BP, ask the staff to help roll your car away from the pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Claypole, leave the car where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next junction is where to come off when you are on the M1, under 25 miles from Claypole.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Lincoln, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Claypole.

## Claypole: what takes place when our technicians arrive

Outside The Claypole Church of England Primary School, near Claypole Village Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run, since the replies settle this work and the quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

A test is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers go.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need about half an hour after our engineers arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Dry Doddington and Fernwood are among the places near Claypole, a rural village, that the same vans cover, throughout NG postcodes.

Quote a postcode that starts NG23 5, and the van gets there fastest.

No need to move your car.

The drain happens right there, be it a drive, a road by St Peter's, or a layby on the way to Claypole Community Park.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St Martin.

## In short, for Claypole drivers

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Lincolnshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave it off then call 0333 366 0103.
