# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cleeve? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Being water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts when your pump begins pulling it.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Cleeve.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Cleeve: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Tell us a postcode starting BS49 4, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call wherever you are.

Don't:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Many diesels run their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up Bishops Road.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Moving the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Cleeve forecourt you are on, the Esso included.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It does not blend. After it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel.

The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A vehicle filled on a driveway in Yatton yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the engine runs, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; and, because it attacks some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there.

Overnight, a vehicle parked in Cleeve with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is just in your tank, nothing changes.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running through them, and so the water content damages them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Murco.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether the vehicle sits in Brockley or the centre of Cleeve, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other error, and the flush counts more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever across Somerset your vehicle sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Cleeve?

It is not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Court-De-Wyck Church School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Graitney Close.

Or a driver new to that flap refills your car in dim light, stopped in the car park by Star.

It crops up most in a hire car, a new vehicle, a fleet vehicle, or the spare car of a family with one of each fuel types — the cars people know the least.

Anywhere across Somerset, Cleeve included, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cleeve?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the fuel filter, through the lines, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Perhaps returning from Broadcroft Play Area, or part way across Cleeve, the motor might run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M5, under 3 miles from Cleeve, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Hopping across Cleeve to the car park by Millennium Gardens is one matter; heading towards Bristol, under 10 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it's spotted quickly.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Cleeve: what it takes

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Cleeve: a side street near Claverham Village Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the work, and so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid was put in, roughly what quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, because residue won't wash away by itself.

Testing your vehicle follows at the end, after clean diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your motor has not run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the system with new diesel comes last.

Whether it's a parking bay outside Yatton or a driveway in Cleeve, that is where our technicians fire it up and you drive off.

The test before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Cleeve itself

Cleeve is a small village in Somerset, situated inland at an elevation of 23 metres, approximately 9 miles from Bristol. Cleeve lies near the villages of Claverham and Lower Claverham, and is close to Kenn Moor Gate. Cleeve has a population of around 717 people, predominantly living in detached houses.

## AdBlue drains around Cleeve and across Somerset

AdBlue jobs in Cleeve go to teams that cover the places around it — Claverham, Lower Claverham plus Kenn Moor Gate — and most of Somerset beyond, across BS postcodes.

Guessing won't help by a border or anywhere tricky to describe; ring and ask.

No towing is needed. In Cleeve, a rural village, a mobile service works: your car is drained where it stands, be it on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Cleeve?

Because each callouts differ, a single price would not be honest.

What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Cleeve Village Hall.

Before a figure, never afterwards, every call from Cleeve opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus if the engine ran.

With them, the range narrows to one fixed number.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

As our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## In Cleeve and still alongside the vehicle?

In that case, do nothing — that's the most helpful step there is.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Cleeve or anywhere around Somerset.
