# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Clehonger? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system pulls it in.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Clehonger.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Clehonger, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- Pull the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the amount, so don't throw it away.

- Tell us a postcode starting HR2 9, or whatever street is nearest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Do not:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Even a short way up Birch Hill Road is too far to drive it.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

Moving your vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Clehonger forecourt you are on, the Shell or any other.

On your own drive, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a separate tank it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its supply from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Ruckhall overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it hits for as long as it stays there.

A vehicle left standing in Clehonger with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Tesco.

Blended through your diesel and left still, it is harmless for now; running the engine is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

It can't just be run through, because it does not burn.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the next fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Clehonger or out in Cobhall Common, costs more than nearly any other slip.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Wherever in Herefordshire your car has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Clehonger: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it's never the filling station: a driver buys a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Hurrying, outside Clehonger CofE Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Gosmore Road.

Otherwise, after dark outside The Seven Stars, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people use least.

Anywhere around Herefordshire, Clehonger included, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Clehonger?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

It has been pulled through the fuel filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may appear, maybe part way across Clehonger or returning from Courtlands Plantation.

When safe, pull over then turn it off — with no restarting to see.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M50, under 15 miles from Clehonger, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Clehonger to the car park by Clehonger Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards Hereford, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Clehonger: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest around Clehonger — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street by All Saints — our van travels to the vehicle.

Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, and whether the engine has turned over: our engineers check before all else, since those shape the job.

Next, emptying that tank right there takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together.

A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't wash out by itself.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, if the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Hereford or on a drive around Clehonger.

The test before we head off is that it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

A van that comes to you suits Clehonger, a village: there's no need to bring your car to us, since our technicians drain it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Clehonger

Not one flat price would be fair, since each job differs.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight space behind Eaton Bishop Village Hall.

Before a figure, never after, each enquiry from Clehonger opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if it ran.

Those replies narrow a range right down to a single number.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
