# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cliff

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Cliff, finding it before your engine runs normally means draining and a full flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels around Cliff and Under Hill run, with diesel feeding the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both together under one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Cliff

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Cliff Road before work, or in the car park outside The Postcard on the way home.

New-to-you cars come second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and after the pour starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Cliff or out in New Town.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Cliff forecourt or a drive out in Gully, spend a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Brockholes, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Hey Cliff Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The two behind one flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel filler stays shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Cliff?

Short list, then. First: your engine remains off.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Murco, the Texaco or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Cliff.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then switch off.

Cliff lies under 10 miles from the Outlane Interchange; on it, use the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wakefield, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Cliff.

## Cliff: what occurs when our technicians get there

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Holmfirth Junior Infant and Nursery School, near Holmfirth Masonic Hall or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — what liquid, what amount, and if it has run — so we ask.

No one heads out until you've heard the quote over the phone.

Then that tank is emptied and the system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Next we start it and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run need roughly half an hour once we arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Cliff included

As a residential suburb, Cliff shares its vans nearby areas — New Gate, Holmfirth — right across HD postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting HD9 1.

The vehicle remains put.

Anywhere it sits — beside Druids Hall, on a lay-by heading to Cliff Recreation Ground, on a drive — that's where it gets emptied.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Bamforth & Co? By a county line? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.

## In short, for Cliff people

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103.
