# Clifftown: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Clifftown.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels around Prittlewell, like those in Clifftown, run on two liquids; your engine gets just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Clifftown?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Clifftown Parade, or on the way home in the car park outside The Alex.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it.

It's seconds, whether out in Southend-on-Sea or bang in the heart of Clifftown.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Chalkwell or a forecourt in Clifftown, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Southend Central? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever around Essex the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Alexandra Road.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly using its own spout.

- Close the cap, and check once more — making sure the diesel cap stayed shut the whole time. After that, start your car.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Clifftown already?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on by itself runs your fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the BP, the Esso or somewhere else.

Your own driveway around Clifftown is where it stays.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Clifftown sits under 15 miles from the M2; on it, take the next exit.

A short hop across Clifftown is a smaller job than a run towards Southend-on-Sea, under a mile away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers arrive in Clifftown, what happens?

By Barons Court Primary School and Nursery, close to Queen Victoria or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide the work and quote.

On the call itself, you are told our price — ahead of dispatch.

Draining that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

After that our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our engineers are there.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## About Clifftown, briefly

## Clifftown and Essex: AdBlue drains across the area

As a residential suburb, Clifftown has the same vans as surrounding areas — Porters Town, Westcliff-on-Sea — right across SS postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Fastest of all: quote a SS1 1 postcode to our van.

There's no need to shift the car.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Prittlewell Square, a side street close to Clifftown Telephone Museum: we drain the car where it sits.

Awkward to explain, like the back of St Mark's, Southend? By a border? Asking is better than guessing, so phone.

## Clifftown people: the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Essex, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
