# Clifton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Clifton.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that's what many modern diesels near Clifton and Redland carry, with diesel for your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Clifton: how it takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Alma Vale Road, perhaps outside The Alma on the way home after work.

New-to-you vehicles come second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, carries on.

Victoria Park or the heart of Clifton: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Hotwells or a forecourt around Clifton.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Clifton Down, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Bristol, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pembroke Vale, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Clifton?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the Asda or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Clifton.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M32, under 3 miles from Clifton, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bristol, under a mile away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Clifton.

## Clifton: what takes place when we get there

Outside Christ Church Church of England Primary School, close to The Randall Room or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run, since those answers decide the work and our quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Before we go, we start the engine and confirm that it is running properly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

## Clifton and Bristol: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout BS postcodes, the vans that cover Clifton — a residential suburb — work the surrounding locations too, Clifton Wood and Tyndalls Park among them.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting BS8 3.

Your car stays put.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near All Saints with Saint John, a lay-by on the way to Collins' Piece, a drive.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Dorothy Brown.

## The short version for Clifton drivers

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Bristol, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
