# Clifton: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and the ignition too.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

The harm starts once it is sucked through the pump — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Clifton.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Clifton, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- Take the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not throw it away.

- Call just where you are. Quote a NG11 9 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition the car.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself sets the pump running on many diesels. Skip it.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance down Southchurch Drive.

- Draining the tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

The attendants on duty at any Clifton filling station — the Esso among them — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask.

At your own drive, don't move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

A motor filled on a driveway in Barton in Fabis overnight and not started since is the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though once the motor runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

After it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; and, since it attacks certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

Overnight, a car sitting around Clifton with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's just in your tank, it doesn't.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate form of harm.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the BP.

Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether your car is in Attenborough or the centre of Clifton, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in Nottinghamshire the vehicle sits.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Clifton

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and after dark the two may look identical. No one intends it.

A container picked up when driving home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Blessed Robert Widmerpool Catholic Primary and Nursery School.

Close to Green Lane, someone tips a container in at home in the evening.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Peacock, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the other motor in a home with both fuels.

Leave it switched off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever around Clifton or the rest of Nottinghamshire you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Clifton, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

It has been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from The Kieron Hill Clifton War Memorial Garden or halfway across Clifton.

No starting it again to check: stop once safe, then turn it off.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Clifton sits under 10 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading towards Nottingham, under 5 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Clifton to the car park by Clifton Library.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where the car has ended up, and once your engine has been started there is more of it.

Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Clifton

Wherever it has come to rest around Clifton — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Clifton Young People's Centre — the van travels to the vehicle.

Three answers shape the work, so first our engineers ask what went in, about what quantity, plus if the engine has run.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains won't clear out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The final step is to prime your system on clean diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay by Beeston or a drive around Clifton, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

Our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving.

No workshop is needed at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## About Clifton, briefly

Clifton is a locality in Nottinghamshire, situated on the banks of the River Trent at an elevation of 44 metres. Clifton lies close to the city of Nottingham, approximately 3.9 miles southwest of the city centre. Clifton is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock and forms part of the wider Nottingham urban area, with nearby places including Ruddington, Rylands, and Wilford.

## Clifton and Nottinghamshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Our teams that answer AdBlue call-outs in Clifton also cover the spots about it, Ruddington, Rylands and Wilford among them, and most of Nottinghamshire beyond, across the NG postcode area.

Phone and ask rather than guess when you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

Wherever the vehicle stands — a driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — we empty it on the spot, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Clifton, a small village, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Clifton: the cost of fixing it

Every job differs, and so no single quote is fair.

What changes the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Good Companions.

Before any quote, not afterwards, every enquiry from Clifton opens with three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus whether the engine ran.

When those are answered, a range turns into a single fixed number.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Still beside your car around Clifton?

In that case, touch nothing — that's the most helpful move there is.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus if it ran is all we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Nottinghamshire, Clifton too.
