# Clive: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Clive.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels in Wharton, as well as Clive, run on two fluids; your engine takes just the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

There's a filler for every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Clive

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off Beckett Avenue before work, or in the car park at Brighton Belle (Hungry Horse) heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Clive or out in Clive Green.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Manor Park or a forecourt in Clive, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook shows which it lives if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Winsford's car park, say — not once the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in Cheshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Seaton Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five is out.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Clive already?

Don't start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

Leave your ignition off too, since on many diesels it alone starts the pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the Morrisons, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

Your own drive around Clive is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

On the M6, under 5 miles from Clive, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Clive is less a job than a trip of under 25 miles towards Chester, so tell us.

## Clive: what occurs when our engineers get there

Anywhere your car came to rest, whether outside Willow Wood Community Nursery and Primary School, near Trinity Community Centre or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those replies settle the work and our quote.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting CW7 3.

The car stays where it is.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Stanthorne Play Area, a side street close to Trinity Methodist Church: our engineers drain the vehicle where it sits.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Wharton Library? By a border? Checking beats guessing, so phone.

## Clive motorists: the short version

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Cheshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
