# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cliviger

Leave the engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits in Cliviger, is usually all it takes if found before the motor runs.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels on the roads around Cliviger and Holme Chapel carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

It is in the gap that the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Cliviger?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Mount Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Kettledrum Inn on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Cliviger or out in Over Town.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Brunshaw or a forecourt around Cliviger, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles show what belongs in each filler right there.

- The handbook says which it is when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Burnley Manchester Road, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere in Lancashire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Burnley Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Cliviger?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Monarch Garage, Tesco or another forecourt will normally help pushing the car clear if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Cliviger.

Already run? Stop once it's safe, then turn off.

Cliviger lies under 3 miles from the M65; on it, use the first exit.

A short hop across Cliviger is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Cliviger: what occurs when our technicians arrive

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, be it outside St John's CofE Primary School, Cliviger, near Towneley Hall or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, since the answers determine the work and the quote.

That quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes away on its own, however long it is left.

A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and confirm that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## Cliviger and Lancashire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a village, Cliviger has the same vans as surrounding places — Southward Bottom, Mereclough — all the way across BB postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Give a postcode that starts BB10 4, and the van gets there quickest.

Moving the car is not necessary.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Spring Gardens, a side street close to Museum of Local Crafts & Industries: our technicians drain the vehicle where it is.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Foldys Cross.

## For Cliviger people, the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103.
