# Coal Aston: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where the car stands around Coal Aston, is normally all it needs when caught before your engine runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels around Holmley Common, as well as Coal Aston, carry on two fluids; the motor takes just the diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Coal Aston: how it takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Eckington Road, perhaps outside The Chequers on the way home that evening.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and once the tip begins, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Coal Aston or out in Snape Hill.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Coal Aston or a driveway over in Bowshaw. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Dronfield.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are around Derbyshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Cunliffe Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Coal Aston?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Total, the Sainsbury's or anywhere else.

At home in Coal Aston? Then the car stays put.

When your motor has been run by now, stop safely and turn the car off.

Coal Aston lies under 10 miles from the M1; on it, take the next exit.

Distance counts — a short hop across Coal Aston makes a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Sheffield — so say about how far it went.

## When we arrive in Coal Aston, what occurs?

Wherever the car has stopped, be it outside Northfield Junior School, near Coal Aston Methodist Church or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run, because the answers decide the work and the price.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of that clears out on its own, however long it sits.

Once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the car is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
