# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cobbs: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where your car sits around Cobbs, is usually what it needs when caught before your engine runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Cobbs and Lower Walton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Cobbs: how it happens

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

On a driveway off Clydesdale Road before work, or in the car park outside London Bridge Inn on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a new car.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Stockton Heath or the middle of Cobbs, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Wilderspool or a forecourt around Cobbs.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a rental or company car — from Warrington Bank Quay's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, wherever around Cheshire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Cobbs Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Cobbs?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Morrisons, Esso or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle clear when you ask.

On your own drive around Cobbs? Then your car stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

On the M56, under 3 miles from Cobbs, that means the next junction.

Distance matters — a short hop across Cobbs is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Salford — so say roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when we arrive around Cobbs

By The Cobbs Infant and Nursery School, near St Mary Magdalene or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Those answers decide the work and the price, so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run.

Nobody heads out until you've had our quote over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. That is why it counts more.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Your engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

Give a postcode beginning WA4 3, and the van gets there quickest.

Moving the vehicle is not necessary.

Anywhere it stands — near St Monica's Catholic Church, on a layby en route to Lumb Brook Millennium Green, on a drive — that is where it gets emptied.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Bethesda Evangelical Church, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## In short, for Cobbs motorists

Tip no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Cheshire.
