# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cockermouth

Pause reading for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle is in Cockermouth.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many newer diesels in Bridekirk, like those in Cockermouth, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

There is a filler for each tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cockermouth: how it occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Main Street, or heading home in the car park at The Globe Hotel.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Goat or the heart of Cockermouth: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Stanger or a forecourt around Cockermouth.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Maryport.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere around Cumbria the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Station Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Cockermouth?

Short order, then. Top of it: the motor stays off.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Oakhurst Petrol Station, the Essex Garage or anywhere else.

On your own drive around Cockermouth? Then the car remains where it is.

When the engine has been run by now, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

The next junction means where to come off if you are on the Southwaite Services Northbound, under 25 miles from Cockermouth.

A short hop across Cockermouth is a smaller job than a run towards Carlisle, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we arrive in Cockermouth, what occurs?

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Fairfield Primary School, near The Vicky or on your own drive.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those replies decide the work and our quote.

During the call itself, you are told the price — ahead of anything else.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of your vehicle.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it is running properly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
