# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cockington: Why It Occurs

Stop reading for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Cockington, finding it before your motor turns usually means draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels around Torre, as well as Cockington, run on two fluids; the motor gets only your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

There's a filler for every tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap to use.

It's in the gap that the error happens.

## Cockington: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Vicarage Hill before work, or in the car park outside Drum Inn on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles come second, too. Rentals, new cars and company cars place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

It's seconds, whether in Chelston or bang in the heart of Cockington.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Shiphay or a forecourt around Cockington.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Torquay, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around Devon, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush by Forgeway Close on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check once more — making sure the diesel filler remained shut the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cockington?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

Leave the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs your fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Shell, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump.

On your own drive in Cockington? Then the vehicle remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction is where to leave when you are on the M5, under 15 miles from Cockington.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Cockington is less a job than a trip of under 25 miles to Exeter, and so say.

## Cockington: what takes place when we arrive

Anywhere the car came to rest, whether outside Cockington Primary School, beside Cocklington Gallery or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — which fluid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out by itself. That is why it matters more.

Filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car.

Before we go, our engineers start the car and confirm that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Cockington and Devon: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout TQ postcodes, the vans that cover Cockington — a residential suburb — work the surrounding spots too, Hollicombe and Livermead among them.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting TQ2 6.

There's no need to move your car.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Sawmill Copse, a side street close to St. Matthew's Church: our engineers drain the car where it stands.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Church of St. George & St. Mary? Close to a border? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.

## The short version for Cockington motorists

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Devon, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103.
