# Codnor: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens till the engine sucks it round.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully cleaned where the car stands around Codnor.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Codnor, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- Pull the keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting DE5 9, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: the engine remains off.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down High Street.

- By the road, don't attempt emptying it yourself.

The staff working at any Codnor filling station — the Sainsbury's included — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask.

Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

From a separate tank it is fed directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of mixing — quite unlike fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits underneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Peasehill yesterday and not switched on stays the simple one, provided nobody touches your key.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and narrow passages; and, since it eats at some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight around Codnor leaves it worse. Inside that tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives none of that, which is a separate form of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger problem?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that's the whole issue.

No damage is done as long as it sits unused, mixed into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Whether your car sits in Woodlinkin or the heart of Codnor, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other error, and the flush matters more. Why: it won't stay blended, and so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Wherever in Derbyshire the car has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## Codnor: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Rushing, outside Codnor Community Primary School Church of England Controlled, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive near Market Place.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Poet and Castle, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Leave it switched off: that is the first response to the same mistake, anywhere around Codnor or the rest of Derbyshire you happen to be.

## Codnor: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might show up, maybe part way across Codnor or returning from Codnor Park.

No restarting to test: pull over once safe, then turn it off.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Codnor lies under 5 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Hopping across Codnor to the car park by Codnor Methodist Church is one thing; driving for Derby, under 10 miles away, is something else, since each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the motor has been started, and we do all of it where the car has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it's caught early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Codnor?

The vehicle remains put, whether that's a road beside Codnor Sports Club, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Codnor, and the van comes to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has run, because those answers determine the work.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

The system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Testing the vehicle comes last, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter is cleaned or, where necessary, swapped.

Not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the last step.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Codnor or in a bay outside Langley Mill.

The check before our engineers go is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## About Codnor, briefly

Codnor is a suburban area in Derbyshire, situated approximately 9 miles northeast of Derby, and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Codnor sits inland, at an elevation of around 128 metres, and is close to nearby places such as Codnor Gate, Waingroves, and Cross Hill. Codnor is home to a population of around 3334 people and is located about 118 miles northwest of London. Codnor forms part of the wider Derby urban area, with the city's amenities and services within easy reach.

## Codnor and Derbyshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Codnor go to vans that cover the places near it — Codnor Gate, Waingroves as well as Cross Hill — and most of Derbyshire further out, throughout DE postcodes.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Anywhere the car sits — your driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — our engineers drain it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; which suits Codnor, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Codnor: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

Three things shift the cost: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

With that reason, every call from Codnor begins by asking the same trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Codnor: still alongside the car?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Codnor or anywhere across Derbyshire.
