# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Coldean

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and the ignition too.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes when your pump starts drawing it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Coldean, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has run.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Coldean, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting BN1 9, or whichever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to reposition your car.

- Switching your key to ignition by itself sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it is pointless.

- Even a short stretch along Coldean Lane is too far to drive it.

- Beside the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Coldean forecourt you're on, the Asda included.

On the drive, the car stays just where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — quite different from fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Hollingbury last night and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of that tank, untouched — but it will be first through once your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there.

A car left standing around Coldean with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate form of damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Esso.

Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside the tank, it does none.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether your car is in Moulsecoomb or the heart of Coldean, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush counts for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere around East Sussex your car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Coldean

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. No one intends it.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Coldean Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Selham Drive.

One more version: darkness, the car park by Ruby, and someone opening that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you're in Coldean or the rest of East Sussex, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Coldean?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Given any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from Haig Park, perhaps, or midway across Coldean.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Coldean lies under 25 miles from the M23; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Coldean to the car park by St Mary Magdalen Community Hall is a very different job from a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been running.

If it is noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Coldean: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a street near St Mary Magdalen, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Coldean, and our van comes to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if the engine has been run, because those replies settle the work.

Next, draining your tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Whether it's a parking bay by Falmer or a drive in Coldean, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off.

We check it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Near a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.

Coldean is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Coldean

There's no fair single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Coldean Library.

That's why each call from Coldean starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

With them, the range narrows to one fixed number.

The price is given on the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Beside the vehicle in Coldean, right now?

Not touching the car is, right now, the most useful move open to you.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, in Coldean or wherever within East Sussex, after you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether the engine ran.
